AI Applications in Manufacturing: Leading Edge or Behind the Curve
Top Takeaways
Accurate data is a key foundation for successful AI applications
For an AI product to work well, the data must be accurate. Data cleaning and context are critical considerations and actions. It’s a garbage in, garbage out model wherein conflicting information in data sources leads to conflicting results.
Governance, risk management, and safety requirements are critical
AI systems are probabilistic, meaning we do not always know how the AI will respond. Therefore, it’s necessary to identify and create the equivalent of safety-level specifications for AI. Safe and secure AI is necessary to make it pervasive across all applications which will then be will be transformative for the industry.
Understand the ecosystem, get comfortable and literate
AI is a suite of tools that will continue to evolve quickly. Flexibility is critical, as is getting employees comfortable with interacting with AI and adopting it in their task flows. Failure to engage with and build skills in AI will create a detriment. The workforce will eventually be expected to use AI tools with the same widespread proficiency as Microsoft Office.
Focus on the end result
Don’t use AI for the sake of using AI – identify the problem and clearly define the use case when assessing AI solutions. AI is an incredible tool that can be used, but it's just like any other tool. It needs to be tailored to the process, it needs to be thoughtfully applied, and if you have the end in mind, you can show the ROI.
